MEI Wins Award for Environmental Excellence
WEST CHESTER, Pa., October 9, 2008 – MEI has been awarded the Industria Limpia (Clean Industry) certification at its manufacturing facility in Querétaro, Mexico. Overseen by the Federal Enforcement Agency for the Environment (PROFEPA), Industria Limpia certification is the Mexican government’s highest level of recognition for environmental excellence.
“MEI recognizes our company’s responsibility to nurture sustainable business practices in all areas of our organization,” said Mike Hayes, MEI chief executive officer. “Our Querétaro plant has committed to protecting the environment, and we are proud that the Mexican government has recognized these efforts.”
The MEI Querétaro plant manufactures coin and bill validators for payment system customers worldwide. Committed to environmental protection, plant management began working toward Clean Industry certification in 2007. MEI worked with PROFEPA to create an action plan that exceeded basic compliance standards. After completing this action plan and passing detailed audits and rigorous testing, PROFEPA authorities awarded MEI the certification on August 21. MEI plant personnel joined with the community to celebrate and tour the facility.
“Our facility has always been dedicated to operating in smarter and cleaner ways to limit our environmental impact and improve our community’s quality of life,” said Miguel Aguilar, plant director of the Querétaro facility. “Achieving Clean Industry certification is a testament to our team’s motivation and enthusiasm for going above and beyond.”
Upholding Industria Limpia standards is part of MEI’s ongoing commitment to promote sustainable business practices on a global level. During the past year, MEI’s Querétaro plant introduced a variety of environmental initiatives to work toward certification, including:
- A 30 percent reduction in overall power consumption, saving 52 tons of CO2 per year
- Significant investments in water conservation, including initiating a recycling system that uses air conditioning condensation to irrigate gardens
- Recycling programs for 100 percent of all materials consumed at the facility, including organic food wastes
- A dedicated “Green Team” task force to launch environmental programs plant-wide
About Industria Limpia Certification
In 1992, the Mexican Federal Enforcement Agency for the Environment (PROFEPA) began the National Environmental Audit Program (PNAA), to work with industry to promote environmental excellence. As part of this program, the Mexican government awards its Industria Limpia (Clean Industry) certification to facilities meeting its highest environmental standards. The certification is renewable every two years.
